RSS Feeds

Well, my iGoogle page is filling up! It's useful to see the 23 Things information there and now that I have almost caught up, I can see the next Things that I have to do.

Browsing my iGoogle page, I've realised that I have already set up a Google Reader account to aggregate feeds and have even set up different folders for different subject areas. So, I have tried to get to grips with RSS feeds before.

I think my major problem is a fundamental issue with how RSS works and how I work! With emails, I like to browse the emails, read and delete some, go back to others and I just don't seem to have this functionality with the feeds. I guess that's the nature of feeds in being immediate but also transient as well. So perhaps I need to be more disciplined in checking them more reguarly so that I keep up to date in a more timely matter. But after checking emails, phone messages and other alerting services, RSS feeds just seem to fall off the end of the list of things to do...

Doodle

I have used Doodle a couple of times already and find it very useful. It's quick and easy to set up and more importantly, quick and easy to fill in. Best of all, you can visually assess everyone's availability and get that meeting set up!

I hadn't thought of pulling it through to my iGoogle page. This is a useful way to remind me of the various polls, to see updates and would act as a carrot to start using my iGoogle page more.

iGoogle

I've had an iGoogle page for a little while now. When I first set it up I used it quite a lot and invested time in setting up different tabs for my different subject areas and pulled in feeds from various journals such as the BMJ and Science. But, as mentioned in my first entry, never really got to grips with the feeds.

I found the "To Do" list very useful, especially the fact that you can prioritise it, but I am afraid I have reverted back to pieces of paper and notes in my diary (and my head).

As someone who moves between sites and desks (roaming to Gibbet Hill and HRI), I really should make more use of iGoogle and that will be one of my 23 Things resolutions (I'm NOT going to make 23 resolutions!).

And, of course, I have the waddling penguins who are very relaxing to watch - but not nearly as cute as the real things!

23 Things - here I come!

Well, I have finally got round to registering! Given that I am part of the 23 Things Team, I should have done so a lot earlier, but better late than never!

I'm hoping that the 23 Things programme will do three things:

1. Introduce me to new services, some of which I have heard of but haven't got round to playing with
2. Remind me about services that I have tried out, was going to use and then haven't!
3. Confirm that the services I am using I am getting the most out of.

I'm especially inetersted in the RSS week. I get what RSS feeds are and what they do, but just can't get them working for me in any practical sense. Perhaps that has something to do with the way I work? I admit that I don''t really have a Web 2.0 mindset.

I'm also not a blogger. My biggest barrier is the fact that I feel I have nothing important to contribute or share. Or at least, nothing new to contribute or share. Who is intersted in what I'm doing or thinking? A colleague asked me once if I twittered and I replied "Not online!" A sentiment that will be shared by everyone in the office on Floor 3!
The picture is looking back at St Mary's from Tresco in the Scilly Isles. It's supposed to be calming - and of course, has a purple glow. Having taken the image myself, there are no copyright issues involved, although perhaps I ought to think about slapping a Creative Commons Licence on it?
